GALT, CA (MPG) - The Liberty Ranch co-ed tennis team hosted Bradshaw Christian on Monday afternoon. The matches went well into the evening and in an upset, the Hawks beat the number one ranked team 5-4.
Head coach Hunter Franklin praised the way his Hawks played.
“I am really proud of how the team played today,” said Franklin. “They showed up ready to compete and won the points that mattered. The fact that we were able to compete and win against a team as talented as Bradshaw without our No. 1 girl player really shows the depth and flexibility that we have in the ladder, and I couldn’t ask for a better start to the second half of the season.”
Both James Briggs and Alfredo Ramos lost their singles matches to Bradshaw. Fatima Lopez beat her opponent 6-1, 6-3. Summer McCoy played a close match but lost in a tie-breaker 7-5, 3-6, 7-10.
Liberty Doubles Joseph St Claire and Kymani Fenika lost their match to Bradshaw, but the Lions were forced to forfeit the second boys' doubles.
The Liberty Doubles girls brought the wins when Payton Best and Eden Lethbridge won 6-0, 6-1. Bradshaw forfeited the second girls' doubles.
With the score tied, it came down to Johnathan Gorbet and Nayeli Escalera in the mixed doubles. Bradshaw fought hard and the game went into a tiebreaker where Liberty Ranch came out victorious, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
