SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - Classic cars are the specialty of a new Auburn Boulevard automotive business. McElroy’s Repair and Restoration opened with a recent ribbon cutting.

For the celebration, 50 classic cars packed the shop’s parking lot. A ‘50s band played, shave ice was dispensed and auto-freaks exchanged rod-chat. “A car show seemed a great way for the community to get a feel for our operation,” explains owner Steve McElroy. “People are attracted to the body lines, the colors and the history of these vehicles.”

The mechanic’s passion for classic cars was ignited by his father. “Dad (Patrick McElroy) loved older cars,” the son recalls. “When he was young, he had hot rods. We planned to build one together, but he passed away before we could get to that.

“I’d trained and worked in general automotive. After dad died, I rebuilt a Chevy Chevelle in his honor. That changed my interests. I got a job at a hot rod shop and eventually took my training and knowledge to my new business.”

McElroy chose his Auburn Boulevard (Citrus Heights) location for proximity to parts vendors and for the road’s long automobile tradition. Also known as Lincoln Highway, the route was created in 1913 to promote leisure driving. “We’re on the Classic Route 40,” notes McElroy. “We’re proud to be part of that history.”

The shop services pre-1970s vehicles. “We do everything we can to keep them safe and sound,” says McElroy. It’s important to keep them on the road and keep their history alive. We share their owners’ passion. I learn something new about these cars every day. No two are alike.”

McElroy last week chauffeured for his first parade "' the Carmichael July 4 pageant "' in his two-tone 1958 Chevy station wagon. “That was fun,” he reports. “People loved seeing my family in our car. They also noticed the two kids’ seats we have for our sons. Our Brookwood might be 64 years old, but it’s still a safe family car.”
