SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – Sia Magadan of Rio Linda has joined United Way California Capital Region as director of its Impact department that runs the nonprofit’s many programs focused on ending poverty for local families starting in school.

Prior to joining United Way, Magadan was director of community engagement and fundraising for Rootid, a communications agency in Berkeley focused on nonprofits. Before that, she worked as development manager for the Oakland Literacy Coalition and Edventure More in San Leandro. She also serves as a consultant for BIPOC nonprofits through her firm, edYOUcate.

“Sia's invaluable expertise in education and her deep understanding of the unique challenges facing unhoused and foster youth within our community make her a valuable addition to our team,” said Dr. Dawnté Early, president and CEO, United Way California Capital Region. “With Sia overseeing this work, we look forward to making lasting strides toward positive change in the lives of these youth, ultimately contributing to United Way’s broader goal of ending poverty through education.”

Founded in 1923, United Way California Capital Region has been a transformative force in the Sacramento community for more than a century, serving Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties. The local United Way’s Square One approach to ending poverty is grounded in a public health model and uses a threefold strategy to address community needs from birth and beyond: helping kids excel in school, investing in families and strengthening schools. At United Way’s core is the philosophy that families possess the blueprint for their success. United Way supplies books to young children, provides literacy tutoring, addresses housing and food security, leads the region’s largest tax preparation initiative, and launched Sacramento’s first guaranteed income program. United Way works across diverse school districts, providing case management for foster youth and leading the Community Schools initiative in West Sacramento.
