Prescribed Burn to Remove Invasive Plants at Cosumnes River Preserve

Jun 12, 2024 03:16PM ● By Bureau of Land Management News Release
GALT, CA (MPG) - The Bureau of Land Management is coordinating with The Nature Conservancy on a prescribed burn at the Cosumnes River Preserve to improve habitat for native species. For safety, the BLM will temporarily close portions of the River Trail May 30 - 31 during the prescribed burn in Sacramento County and the northern part of San Joaquin County. The Boardwalk, Wetlands Trail, and a portion of the River Trail (the part that goes around Willow Slough Ponds) will remain open to the public. Please check the cosumnes.org webpage for current trail closures.

The burn area is 56 acres and will target yellow star thistle in the oak savanna area. The smoke may impact the communities of Thornton and Galt. Timing of the one-day burn will depend on weather conditions, air quality, resource availability, and onsite observations.

The burn is being closely coordinated with the Nature Conservancy, the Cosumnes Fire Department, and the Bureau of Land Management.

The Cosumnes River Preserve will remain open during burn activities with all trails on the west side of Franklin accessible to the public. As a precaution, visitors should watch for wildland fire equipment and firefighters on the roads and be prepared to slow down.
