GALT, CA (MPG) - The Kevin Tonn Memorial Run has been a Galt tradition for 12 years now. When Galt Officer Kevin Tonn lost his life in the line of duty Jan. 15, 2013, a group of community members came together to fundraise for the memorial at City Hall.
The “Run for the Badge” or Kevin Tonn Memorial Run was one of the first fundraisers held and has continued throughout the years. Kevin’s parents, Mary Ann and Will Tonn, attend every year to cheer on the runners and hand them water when they finish. The City of Galt Parks and Recreation department has taken over the run, and the proceeds now go to help with scholarships for children’s sports.
This year, 100 runners came out to honor Kevin Tonn during one of the hottest days of the year. The run started at 8 a.m. and finished before the parade at 9:30.
Seventeen-year-old Kitto Gonzalez finished first with 17-year-old Logan Rose seconds behind with times of 16:19 and 16:23. The young men are cross country runners for Galt High School, and Kitto has made it to State to run three times.
Eleven-year-old Blake Morgan gave it his all and finished before most adults as the first boy to finish.
Stephanie Paulsen was the first female to finish with 12-year-old Maddie Kenner finishing with her as the first minor girl to finish.
Tom Malson was the oldest runner to finish this year at 72 years old.
The Tonns expressed their gratitude to everyone that came out to honor Kevin and thank the volunteers and especially the City of Galt for organizing the run every year.
