GALT, CA (MPG) - After a summer of practicing five days a week, the Galt High cheer squad headed to Roseville to attend Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp at Jessup University.
New coaches Barbara Welch and Lauren Cole chaperoned the 39 girls to the university where they experienced dorm life and hard work.
The squad learned new cheers, dances and, of course, new stunts. They worked from morning to night, only breaking for meals. The squad brought home a spirit stick and a few performance trophies.
On the third day of camp, girls have the opportunity to try out for All American. The coaches pick who has the sharpest and cleanest skills and the best jumps to try out.  Twelve girls tried out and the five winners were announced on the last morning of camp.
To try out, each girl has to perform a jump, the All American cheer and the camp dance in front of the UCA judges and the rest of the camp.
Keep in mind, they only had the first two days of camp to learn the cheer and dance.
Melanie Flores, Irene Diosdado, Olivia Salas, Angelena Watson and Isabella Cantu won the honor and were awarded a patch for their letterman jacket.
The All American cheerleaders now have the opportunity to attend a Varsity Spirit special event. This year, they can perform in Thanksgiving parades at Disney World or Philadelphia, the Pearl Harbor Memorial parade in Hawaii, New Year’s Day parade in Rome, or perform at halftime in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
