GALT, CA (MPG) - After nearly three years of recovery, a Galt police officer severely injured in an on-duty crash has returned to full-time service.
Officer Kapri Herrera was critically injured in a deadly car crash on Aug. 22, 2021, when she and fellow officer Harminder Grewal were traveling to assist with wildfire response in El Dorado County. Grewal later died of his injuries.
“Our department has since navigated a difficult road, grieving the loss of Officer Harminder Grewal while standing by Officer Herrera through her incredible journey of recovery,” the Galt Police Department said in a release announcing that Herrera’s return to full service began on Aug. 18. “Officer Herrera’s resilience and courage shown over the last three years is nothing short of heroic.”
At the time of the crash, Herrera had been on the force for about six months.
At her public swearing-in in April 2021, Herrera told the Herald that her family’s deep connection with law enforcement “inspired” her, even from a young age.
The department urged Galt residents to welcome Herrera back if they see her around town.
“She’s worked hard to be here with us again, serving the community of Galt and doing the job she loves,” the department wrote.
