GALT, CA (MPG) - The Galt Flea and Produce Market parking lot was packed. These customers know where to find great bargains and fresh vegetables and fruit.
At the Galt Market, not only will the vendors tell you what that unidentifiable produce is but they will tell you how to prepare it.
“Sinqua Mota is an Indian bitter melon,” said Mai Vang, a second-generation vendor. “You don’t peel it; just remove the seeds, slice and eat.”
Your local supermarket likely doesn’t carry jellied guava, cactus apples, quince or jujube fruit, but you will find them here along with many other unique edibles to try.
Where do the produce vendors get their tempting offerings? The offerings often are from their own crops or from other farmers.
“Mostly what we sell is local but we truck in some of our special agricultural products from Southern California,” said Kashmir Jaiya and Abdul Sadat.
If you are looking for good deals on a variety of other items, look no further than the booths spread across the spacious grounds.
Do you need clothes at a reasonable price? You can buy new jeans, tennis shoes, hats, T-shirts, purses and socks.
How about economical household goods? Browse kitchen appliances such as mixers, can openers, blenders and more. Colorful blankets, bedspreads, curtains, rugs and mattresses are available.
Do you have children or grandchildren? Choose small gifts, toys, bicycles or clothing in all sizes.
Angelica Romero “would love” to show you the many kinds of trees, bushes and flowers she brings from the nursery where she works.
“I can save you money on electronic accessories and a wide variety of phone cases,” said Farid Zarini, who has been at the market for eight years. “No middleman and no advertising. Phone cases that would sell for $40, you can get here for $10 to $15.”
After perusing the long aisles full of merchandise, you might be hungry. You can find a food truck or stall with American barbecue, Chinese, Mexican or Vietnamese food. Eat lunch at the picnic tables there. Drink lemonade, coffee or bubble tea.
Finish with dessert: Ice cream or fresh baked goods such as scones, cookies or banana, lemon or pumpkin loaf are tempting.
Come early and enjoy a pleasant morning supporting your neighbors and benefiting your pocketbook. The Galt Flea and Produce Market at 610 Chabolla Ave. is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
