GALT, CA (MPG) - The Liberty Ranch Hawk football team has had their eye on the playoffs all season and their dominating win of 35-0 against the Ripon Indians on Nov. 8 proved just how ready they were.
Head coach Warren Schroeder still has some things he would like to correct. “I do feel as if the boys are really starting to put everything together, but we are still trying to fix some basic mistakes,” explained Schroeder. “Both our offensive and defensive staff have done a great job in game-planning and preparing the boys for our opponent each week.”
Senior quarterback Wyatt Blevins completed three out of six passes for 85 yards and only threw one interception, while the Ripon quarterback threw four interceptions that the Hawks happily snagged.
Blevins said practice this week was amazing. “It was the best week of practice this season,” said Blevins. “Everyone was locked in and focused on beating Ripon. With bringing up the sophomores from junior vasity, we were able to have a good look during practice which helped us play better. Defense played lights out and the offensive line continued to do their job giving me time in the pocket.”
As the athletes prepare to face second seed Woodland Christian, Blevins says the great practice has to continue. “This week we need to have the same intensity, continue to stay focused in practice, and just ball out.”
Schroeder is confident the Hawks will be ready for Friday. “We have spent hours watching film and preparing schemes we feel like will be effective in stopping them and reaching the end zone.”
Joseph Brown added another 120 rushing yards over 28 carries to bring his season total to 1,700 yards. Sophomore Andrew Quinn rushed for 39 yards and sophomore Wyatt Corriea rushed 73 yards in his first varsity game.
Lucas Temple had a 29-yard catch and Brown had two catches for 56 yards.
Camren Hudson caught two interceptions while Brown and Brody Johnston caught one.
Sean O’Brien and Enzo Diaz each recovered a fumble.
Brown and Blevins each scored two touchdowns, and Corriea scored the fifth one. James Rangel kicked four of the PATs and Hunter Owen kicked the fifth.
Hawk defense allowed no quarter, and Hudson was involved in 14 tackles (seven of them solo). Johnston-10, Diaz-5, Quinn-5, Brown-4, Easton Tucker-4, Andres Raya-4, Cesar Becerra-3, Kyle Quaresma-3, Kobe Aguillen-2, Michael Lamson-2, Axel Torres-2, David Romo-2, Soni Takafua-tupou-2, Blevins-1, George Adrian-1, O’Brien-1, and Hunter Adversalo-1.
George Adrian also sacked the Ripon quarterback.
With 20 coaches and lots of parent volunteers, Schroeder is all about the Hawk family atmosphere. “Our statistician Rick Draeger does an amazing job for us each year,” said Schroeder. “He and the other past parent volunteers that are still with us provide a testimonial as to the family atmosphere we have worked hard to cultivate. They believe in us and what we are doing for our boys and are still willing to take the opportunity to contribute to our program’s success. We take a lot of pride in that.”
The Hawks play Woodland Christian in Woodland on Friday, Nov. 15, after press time.
Hawk fans, be aware: There are no bleachers on the visitor side at the stadium in Woodland, and it is recommended Hawk fans bring their own chairs.
