GALT, CA (MPG) - The Lady Warrior basketball team is off to a strong start with a new head coach and a full roster.
They had a challenge at their Foundation game against Ben Holt College Prep Academy and lost 47-39. The Warriors were actually ahead for a while but ultimately gave up the lead. Their next game against Delta was an extremely close game; they only lost by a heartbreaking two points.
New Head Coach Jared Moore used the Foundation game to observe and try different mixes of players.
“The Foundation game was a great opportunity for the coaching team to observe the strengths of the varsity team, and also the opportunities that we can focus on in practice,” said Moore. “Since the game is not considered a pre-season or regular season game, I purposefully played different combinations of players. I also strictly played a man-to-man defense to have the players gain some experience from that. Unfortunately, we were not able to get the win, but the players were able to execute some of the things we had practiced, and that was very satisfying to see. From a coaching perspective, I was invigorated by how the players responded during the game and am looking forward to more continued growth.”
Moore says that he inherited a good foundation to build on.
“The varsity is playing well together in both practice and the game,” explained Moore. “We are fortunate to be led by two freshman guards who came out of two different AAU programs (Skyler Moore and Alexandra Gonzalez). Their experience playing against high-level competition has helped this team from the first practice. In addition, the work the former Galt High coach put into the existing varsity players from last year is evident (and much appreciated). It did not take long for the freshmen guards, and the incoming varsity players, to start gelling at practice. I would be remiss if I did not mention that we are very excited for our JV Team, who has some talent, and the coaching staff is looking forward to their first game.”
Freshman Skyler Moore was the top Warrior scorer in her first high school game against Ben Holt. Moore racked up 10 points. Emily Pena scored eight while freshman Alexandra Gonzalez Landa scored seven. Vanessa Corrales-6, Antonella Feilbach-4, Morgan Jones-3 and Valerie Lopez-1.
Antonella Feilbach, who happens to be the tallest girl on the team, also had nine rebounds.
Skyler Moore managed two rebounds and a whopping seven steals. The girls will face Del Campo and Laguna Creek in the first week in December.
