GALT, CA (MPG) - After a tough preseason, the Hawks have not lost a league game yet. They beat Union Mine 4-0, Amador 7-0, and took out Argonaut 8-1 and are currently standing first in league.
Returning head coach Garett Arechiga is looking for continuity in his players.
“We are trying to get the boys to come together collectively,” said Arechiga. “We had a lot of seniors graduate last year, so basically 50% of the team is new to the group.”
“We have a freshman on varsity,” shares Arechiga. “Ivan Gonzalez has been a pleasant addition as the only freshman we have pulled up to varsity this year and he actually has been our leading goal scorer. We have some players coming back from injury that we are really trying to nurse back so we can get them healthy for that long stretch to the end of the season and into the playoffs.”
Even in the fog the team was passing well.
“The ball moved around well for us,” said Arechiga. “We got contributions from multiple people. We are not overloading the stat sheet with just one goal scorer, we are having multiple players score each game. We schedule our pre-season very tough when it comes to competition. We got to travel out to Pleasant Grove over the weekend, and in my opinion, got humbled. Now the response from Saturday from the boys has been brilliant. You can tell the momentum is just carrying through.”
The team beat Summerville 3-2 on Dec. 17, then came back and beat Amador on Wednesday, Dec. 18. and Argonaut on Friday, Dec. 20.
“Now we have a holiday break till January 2nd and we have to keep these guys firing and hopefully make some noise this year,” said Arechiga. “We are looking to get back up to the top because it has been a long last two seasons with those second-place finish and these boys are hungry for another banner.”
