GALT, CA (MPG) - Amid a cloud of national conversation regarding the interplay between local law enforcement and federal immigration policies, the Galt Police Department issued a statement on its Facebook account on Monday, Feb. 3, reiterating its stance regarding immigration enforcement.
The post stated in part that the department would not participate in immigration enforcement, ask immigration status during contacts with the police nor hold individuals solely based on federal immigration detainers.
The statement added that Senate Bill 54, California’s “sanctuary state” law, prohibits state and local law enforcement agencies from using funds to enforce federal civil immigration laws in lieu of the federal government.
“Our focus remains on building trust, preventing crime, and ensuring everyone feels safe reporting emergencies or seeking help from law enforcement,” the post read. “If you need assistance, know that we are here for you 24/7.”
The post was the latest in a string of posts made across the state by local police departments clarifying their approach to immigration enforcement, including the Sacramento Police Department, which said it would not engage in any immigration enforcement, “as that is a direct violation of our policy and state law (SB54).”
