GALT, CA (MPG) - Two local volunteers were honored as role models of caring and compassion by The Galt Community of Character Coalition with the 2025 Galt Caring and Compassion Award at the Galt City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 4 for their charitable work in the community.
The first award went to Betti Welch for her dedication to consistent volunteer efforts. She’s a regular and cherished volunteer at the Sunshine Food Pantry, giving her time to help alleviate hunger and hardship in the Galt community. She also volunteers to help drive individuals without reliable transportation to their doctors’ appointments.
“This isn’t just a small act; it’s a significant contribution, ensuring that people who might otherwise struggle to get to their appointments can access vital healthcare,” the Coalition said in a news release. “The relief and peace of mind she provides is invaluable. She is always ready to help others in any way she can.”
“Betti Welch is a tremendous asset to our community and deserves this honor as a true role model of caring and compassion.”
She was nominated by Faye Gaines.
The coalition also honored Gayleen Gomez, known affectionately in the local community as “The Cat Lady.”
For 15 years, Gomez has taken a leadership role as a volunteer, helping Galt families respond to feral and abandoned cats and kittens.
Through her non-profit Purrfectly Pawsible, Gomez is able to raise funds to help families find resources to spay, neuter and vaccinate rescue kittens. She has also organized a group of “fosters” to help bottle feed newborn abandoned kittens until they are ready for adoption.
“Gayleen Gomez is an outstanding role model of caring and compassion, whose work, tender heart and ingenious networking have had both immediate and long-term impacts on the Galt community, and we are all so grateful,” the coalition said.
Gomez was nominated by Earl Frey.
