GALT, CA (MPG) - As the 2024-25 wrestling season comes to a close, the Liberty Ranch Hawks reflect on an impressive year, particularly highlighted by the extraordinary achievements of one athlete: Veronika Shayhen.

This season, only Shayhen qualified for the prestigious California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Wrestling Tournament, demonstrating her exceptional talent and determination.

Competing fiercely at the CIF Masters tournament in Stockton, Shayhen battled her way to the semifinals, ultimately finishing in fourth place. Her tenacity and skill not only secured her ticket to the state tournament but also allowed her to compete on day two of the three-day championship event. The fact that she stood alongside some of California’s best wrestlers is a testament to her hard work and dedication.

In the San Joaquin Section, each weight class is allotted five placers to qualify for the state championships. While Shayhen’s journey was one for the books, other local athletes made impressive strides as well.

Kaydince Silva, who wrestled at 110 lbs., narrowly missed out on a placing at the two-day divisional tournament. Meanwhile, competitors Amieleah Muela and Anastasia Richardson earned their spots at Masters through strong performances in the Central Section Regional tournament, finishing in the top six.

The Liberty Ranch girls wrestling team celebrated a significant milestone, expanding its roster to 10 athletes this season out of 13 possible weight classes, successfully taking the league title. This notable increase is a clear reflection of the rapid growth of women’s wrestling nationally. In years past, the Liberty Ranch program had typically seen only four girls regularly participating. With four girls now qualifying for the Masters, the momentum is undeniable.

On the boys’ side, Wyatt Corriea confirmed his spot at the Masters tournament for the second consecutive year as a sophomore. He was accompanied by seniors Chalo Enriquez and sophomore Braden Salbeck, all of whom qualified after placing in the top six at the CIF Divisional tournament.

As the Hawk wrestling program continues to thrive, coaches acknowledge the challenges involved with making it to the state championships—an endeavor made even tougher due to the unique format of having a single state champion in each weight category. California, alongside Indiana, employs this system, making qualification an extraordinary achievement.

“This is the largest team we have ever had in our wrestling room,” said head coach Brian Robinson. “We are very proud of the dedication and efforts of our athletes this season, and we’re excited for what’s to come.”

Looking ahead, Liberty Wrestling is offering a week-long wrestling camp on campus from June 23-27. This camp is an excellent opportunity for aspiring wrestlers to enhance their skills and learn from experienced coaches. All interested participants are encouraged to join.
