GALT, CA (MPG) - In the world of high school sports, a coach's impact can extend far beyond the final whistle. For Rob Huarte, the head coach of the Liberty Ranch Girls’ Soccer team, this sentiment rings true as he celebrates a monumental achievement—his record-breaking 206th career win this season.

Since starting his coaching career in 2000, Huarte has dedicated himself to nurturing young athletes, and his journey has become a remarkable story of passion and perseverance.

Huarte's foray into coaching began rather humbly when his oldest daughter took an interest in soccer. The previous coach lacked knowledge about the game, prompting Huarte to step in. “I didn’t want her to give it up if she liked it so much,” he explained. That desire grew into a commitment that has spanned more than two decades, with Huarte continuing to coach long after his daughters graduated.

His infectious love for soccer has not only helped shape talented athletes but also instilled invaluable life lessons. Huarte emphasizes the importance of building character alongside athletic skill. “It's a huge commitment,” he notes, as conditioning sessions begin in late September and the season runs through February.

Over the years, Huarte has guided an impressive number of athletes, with approximately 30 of his former players moving on to compete at the collegiate level. His coaching journey has taken him from youth soccer (2000-2004) to competitive leagues (2004-2007) and eventually coaching at Galt High (2008-2009) before settling in at Liberty Ranch in 2009.

Among Huarte's fondest memories are the Fort Bragg Tournaments, the inaugural season at Liberty Ranch, and the three section titles his teams have clinched. “Most memorable has to be this season, 2024/25,” he recalled, praising the incredible team dynamic and positivity that permeated the squad this year.

However, Huarte's time as a coach hasn’t been without hardship. The community mourned the loss of two members—Taylor Steele and the Gregorios' mother, Shannon—on the same day, Aug. 8, 2011. Such moments have only galvanized the team's spirit and resilience.

When it comes to tryouts, Huarte looks for more than just raw talent. “A positive attitude, technical and tactical awareness, team-first mentality, speed, and aggressiveness,” he lists as key qualities in candidates. These principles align with his coaching philosophy, which centers on positional play, fluidity and movement, high work ethic, and intelligent decision-making.

By honing these attributes, Huarte aims to cultivate a soccer environment where players excel under pressure, make smart choices, and understand their roles both on the field and in life. His approach has been instrumental in establishing Liberty Ranch as a formidable force in high school soccer, with three section titles to its name under his guidance: D5 Section Champions in 2012/13, D4 Section Champions in 2018/19, and D5 Section Champions in 2024/25.

The Liberty Ranch Girls' Soccer team has also claimed numerous league championships, showcasing their consistent dominance. Huarte's dedication to developing a technically refined, cohesive play style has set a high standard, inspiring successive generations of athletes to strive for excellence on and off the field.

Liberty Ranch Principal Joe Saramago knows what an asset Huarte is. “Coach Huarte has been the Head Women’s Soccer Coach since we opened in 2009,” explains Saramago.  “Passing the 200-win total is a testament to his hard work and commitment to excellence.  As Principal, I am very fortunate to have such a dedicated professional leading our program.”

As Huarte looks back at his storied career, it's clear his legacy is not just about wins, but the countless lives he has touched through his commitment to the sport and his student-athletes.
With a brilliant 206 wins and an unwavering passion for soccer, Huarte’s journey is a testament to the profound impact a dedicated coach can have within a community.
