GALT, CA (MPG) - In a year when Liberty Ranch High’s tennis program very nearly faded before it began, the Hawks’ spirit on the court has been their truest victory.
With 21 dedicated members rallying under the guidance of new head coach Shelby Behrmann, Liberty Ranch’s tennis team has faced a season of challenges. Behrmann, who stepped into the coaching position at the last minute when it appeared the team would have to forfeit the season, described 2024 as “a learning year.”
“I took on this team because I saw how much the players wanted to compete,” Behrmann said. “From the start, our focus has been on effort, improvement, and supporting each other, regardless of the final score.”
Despite not winning a match so far, the Hawks have held their heads high, showing up for practices and matches with a determination that goes beyond the scoreboard. The players have displayed true sportsmanship and learned invaluable lessons that will serve them in future seasons.
For many on the roster, the season’s struggles have only fueled their drive.
“We’re playing for the love of the sport,” said one senior team member. “Even if the scores haven’t gone our way, we’re getting better every week. We know that what we learn this year will make us stronger next year.”
With a full roster returning and a newfound commitment to growth, Liberty Ranch is already looking ahead with optimism. Coach Behrmann is confident that a foundation is being laid for a much stronger showing in seasons to come.
For the Liberty Ranch Hawks, this season has been less about the wins and more about the heart, grit and persistence that define a true team.
