Grocery Outlet Coming to Galt

May 15, 2025 10:40AM ● By Sean P. Thomas, City Editor
GALT, CA (MPG) - A Grocery Outlet is slated to replace the former Rite Aid space on Twin Cities Road, city officials confirmed last week.

The City of Galt officially announced the move in a newsletter sent out to city residents, but had initially alluded to Grocery Outlet’s desire to fill the shuttered space during staff comment period of a City Council meeting in early April. Staff declined to comment until proper permits were submitted, further solidifying the move.

The 17,340-square-foot site at 10570 Twin Cities Road has been shuttered since Rite Aid filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023, closing over 800 stores nationwide.

“Grocery Outlet representatives have indicated that the property transaction may take some time to complete, and they anticipate beginning construction in January 2026,” Assistant City Manager Amie Mendes said in an email. “In the meantime, the City of Galt Community Development Department will be working with Grocery Outlet to process a Conditional Use Permit, tenant improvement plans and updated signage. We have not heard of any other modifications being made to the building, except for enhancements to the landscaping."

Grocery Outlet, based out of Emeryville, markets itself as a discount grocery store.
The company has more than 540 stores throughout the United States, including 20 locally.
There are currently two Grocery Outlets in the Galt area, one in Elk Grove on Bond Road, and another in Lodi on South Cherokee Lane.

According to the Sacramento Business Journal, Grocery Outlet has eyeballed several former Rite Aid locations in the Sacramento region, including one in Placerville and another in Citrus Heights. The locations were among 12 stores that have closed in the area, the publication noted.

The new Grocery Outlet is seated adjacent to a Dollar Tree, Anytime Fitness, Taco Bell, Papa Murphy’s and Tractor Supply.

The announcement was met with a variety of responses on social media.

“It will be nice to have in Galt,” Matthew Edalgo wrote under a Facebook post announcing the move. “The building [is] big enough, compared to the Grocery Outlet in the Bay area. It will be more than big enough.”

Paty Sierra called for more retail options.

“We need a Target or Costco,” Sierra wrote. “That would be nice too.”

Valentina Davis called for a Trader Joe’s to fill the space.

According to Mendes, the location was marketed to Trader Joe’s, as well as Harbor Freight,  TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Michaels and other retailers, but Grocery Outlet was able to strike a deal with the property’s owner.
