GALT, CA (MPG) - In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship that transcended school rivalries, three local senior baseball standouts shared the diamond one final time as high school athletes during the prestigious Optimist All-Star baseball game last Saturday.
The cross-town rivals became teammates. Galt High School’s Nick Reid joined Liberty Ranch Hawks Kade Lecompte and Vance Moe on the small schools team, representing their respective programs with pride while setting aside the usual cross-town competition that has defined much of their high school careers.
The trio earned coveted spots in the 54th annual event hosted by the Sacramento Breakfast Optimist Club Foundation, which showcases the region’s top senior baseball talent while raising funds for charitable causes.
For more than five decades, the Optimist All-Star game has served as both a celebration of graduating seniors’ achievements and a platform for these athletes to display their skills before moving on to the next chapter of their lives.
Selection to the game stands as recognition of the players’ outstanding contributions to their high school programs and their development as both athletes and young men throughout their four-year careers.
While the competition on the field remained spirited, the event represented something deeper for Reid, Lecompte and Moe: a final opportunity to play the game they love at the high school level, and a rare chance to do so as teammates rather than opponents.
