ELK GROVE/GALT, CA (MPG) – The Cosumnes Fire Department is offering high school students opportunities to explore potential careers in the field of fire rescue and emergency medical services through its Fire Explorer Program.

Joining the Explorer Program focuses on learning practical skills as well as making personal growth.

Participants will learn essential life skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork and problem-solving. According to the Cosumnes Fire Department, these lessons will also help build confidence and resilience in a challenging yet rewarding environment.

This also serves as an opportunity to make positive connections and form lifelong memories with students from high schools throughout Elk Grove and Galt.

The program counts toward earning community service hours, where those who participate will actively be making a difference in the community.

“The Explorer Program offers high school students living in the district a chance to explore different careers in fire and emergency medical services,” said Cosumnes Fire Department Assistant Chief Scofield. “The students meet at the fire training center twice a month during the school year, where they learn about the services provided by the fire department, basic first aid, fire science and practice skills that firefighters use in their jobs.”

In addition to teaching invaluable life skills, being a Fire Explorer means getting a head start on college and career readiness. Students will gain insight into the responsibilities of first responders and view their professional journey.

“This valuable opportunity is made possible through funding from Measure E,” Scofield said.

Minimum requirements to participate in the Cosumnes Fire Explorer Program include being between 15 and 18 years old (high school juniors and seniors), maintaining a 2.0 GPA in school, and having a physician-completed medical/physical exam form. No prior experience is necessary to apply.

Applications are being accepted for the 2024–25 school year and are due by Aug. 15. To apply, fill out the Fire Explorer application at cosumnescsd.gov/1356/Fire-Explorer-Program.
