GALT, CA (MPG) - Galt High School Class of 2025 graduate Kitto Gonzalez is taking his impressive running career to the next level, earning a scholarship to compete in cross country and track at UC Merced.
Gonzalez made his mark as one of Galt’s most accomplished distance runners, qualifying for the state meet an impressive three times during his high school career: a testament to his dedication and natural talent on the track and trails.
The talented runner will pursue a major in biological sciences while competing at the Division II level for the Bobcats, a program and university that continue to grow rapidly in both academics and athletics.
“I decided to go to Merced because it would give me the opportunity to stay close to my hometown while also being able to run D2 for a rapidly growing program and school,” Gonzalez explained. “I am very excited to start my academic and athletic journey with UC Merced, especially being in one of the most competitive D2 conferences facing schools like Chico State and Stanislaus State.”
The California Collegiate Athletic Association is indeed known for its competitive distance running programs, providing Gonzalez with the high-level competition he’ll need to continue developing as a collegiate athlete.
As he prepares for this next chapter, Gonzalez took time to acknowledge those who helped him reach this milestone.
“I would like to thank my high school cross country coach, Bruce Peterson, for training me hard and helping me grow,” he said. “As well as my family for always coming out to my races to support me whether it was 30 minutes away, or six-plus hours. And lastly, I would like to thank my girlfriend Elia Rodriguez for always supporting me, motivating me and praying with me before every race.”
