GALT, CA (MPG) - The Galt Warriors girls volleyball team showed incredible heart and determination on Aug. 26, outlasting Cesar Chavez in an epic five-set thriller that had fans on the edge of their seats until the final point.

What started as a back-and-forth battle turned into a showcase of resilience, with the Warriors ultimately prevailing 3-2 in a match that saw every set decided by narrow margins.

Cesar Chavez struck first, taking the opening set 25-19, but Galt immediately answered back with a nail-biting 31-29 victory in set two. The seesaw battle continued as Chavez edged out a 25-23 win in the third set, only to see the Warriors force a decisive fifth set with a gutsy 26-24 fourth-set victory. In the winner-take-all tiebreaker, Galt’s composure under pressure shone through as it captured the match with a 15-13 victory.

The Warriors received outstanding individual performances across the board. Sophomore Zoe Sanchez dominated both ends of the court, leading the team with 22 kills while anchoring the defense with an impressive 32 digs. Morgan Jones proved to be a force at the net, recording five blocks while also serving up six aces to keep Chavez off balance. The team’s ball movement was orchestrated beautifully by Maliah Phulmati, who distributed 26 assists, while Whitney Ellers was rock-solid in serve receive with 59 receptions.

“This year is going to be a fun year,” said head coach Jennifer Sanchez. “The team is full of positivity and they all get along really well. Our on-court chemistry is still developing, but what you saw tonight was a team that refused to fall apart. We kept our heads up, communicated and trusted each other all the way to the final point.”

That mental toughness will serve the Warriors well as they prepare for league competition. Galt will open league play on Sept. 4 with a road match at Rosemont before returning home for its first league contest on Sept. 9 against Bradshaw Christian at 6:30 p.m.

If this season opener is any indication, Warriors fans are in for an exciting season of volleyball.
