GALT, CA (MPG) - On Friday Oct. 3, the spectators at Liberty Ranch’s Hawk stadium were not only treated to a Homecoming win, they were also witnesses to history. With a score of 41-14, the Hawks continued their winning streak toward a playoff berth, but even more personally, they secured a legacy for Head Coach Warren Schroeder with his 100th win as a high school head coach.
Coach Schroeder has been in this community almost his entire life, going to school at Arcohe, playing football at GHS then returning to coach for the Warriors. He served as an assistant coach, defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator and then as a head coach for both the JV and Varsity programs. His tenure hasn’t always been easy. There were some rough seasons, but according to Anthony Sattler, Galt High Class of 2008, there was more to football than wins and losses.
“Coach was invested in the development of each and every one of his players. He not only taught us the plays and concepts of the game at a high level, but furthermore, he taught boys how to be men, instilling morals and ethics while providing an example of how to conduct oneself with honor, integrity and respect.”

After transferring to Liberty Ranch in 2010, Schroeder took a season off before taking over as athletic director. However, Schroeder missed the gridiron and gave up the athletic director job to go back to coaching. He began working with the Junior Hawk organization to help create a true feeder program for Liberty Ranch, to which he attributes much of the high school’s success. His focus on players at all levels and their individual development continued and was evident in both programs’ success.
Liberty Ranch 2022 graduate and SVC Offensive MVP Arthur Draeger (Sacramento City College) said, “I loved playing for Papa Schro. He is a great coach and an even better man. The four years I played for him were my favorite years of football in my life.”
Cody Smith, 2022 graduate (Ball State) agreed with his teammate, but also said, “[Coach] is relentless … is always by our side and wants the best for us as a team.”

However, Coach Schroeder would say that his successes were not facilitated by him alone, but instead all those throughout the years who have been a part of his programs.
“I am so thankful for all of the coaches, players and program volunteers that have been the backbone of everything I have ever been involved in. They are the reason for the continued success over the years, and nothing worthwhile could have been achieved without them.”
Congratulations, Coach Schroeder. Here’s to 100 more!
