GALT, CA (MPG) - The Galt Lions Club will hold its inaugural American Flag Retirement Ceremony at the 4th Street Promenade, next to the flagpole, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.

The ceremony will follow the Galt Market and will include participation from the local fire department and veterans.

Galt Lions Club President Matt Lara said that the club organized the event because no other group in town provides a way for residents to properly retire aged or tattered American flags.

The club has already received about 20 flags from residents who had no way to dispose of them, according to Lara.

“We are glad to finally have somewhere that they can properly retire them,” Lara said.

He explained that the ceremony is significant because the flag is a symbol of our nation and should be handled with respect.

“It’s important because it’s the symbol for our country. It was made in the startup of the United States of America and we believe that it should be held in high regard,” Lara said.

Club members will also provide guidance on proper flag etiquette and tips to preserve flags for longevity at the Nov. 1 ceremony.

Residents can bring flags, including state flags, to be retired the day of the event. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
