GALT, CA (MPG) - The Galt Warrior girls’ flag football team proved that patience and perseverance pay off, claiming third place in league play with a 5-5 record in just its second season of competition.

The remarkable turnaround from last year’s inaugural campaign, which saw the Warriors finish in last place, demonstrates the rapid growth of both the program and the sport itself.

“We came into this season with a renewed sense of purpose,” Head Coach Ryan Tassell said. “Every player brought different strengths to the field, and you could see the chemistry building week after week. While we fell short on a few key moments throughout the year, that’s part of the learning process as this sport continues to develop.”

The Warriors’ success was built on a dominant defense that Coach Tassell credits as the foundation of the team’s turnaround.

“Our defense was absolutely the backbone of this team,” Tassell said. “They held their own against every opponent we faced. They didn’t just give us chances to win;  they kept us competitive in every single game. The improvement from last year has been remarkable.”

That defensive prowess was on full display throughout league competition, as the Warriors posted three shutouts. Galt blanked Argonaut twice, 18-0 and 32-0, and shut out Rosemont 13-0. The team also secured crucial wins against Bradshaw Christian, 10-6 and 14-0.

The Warriors’ improved record earned them a playoff berth, though their postseason run ended with a 25-0 loss to Millennium High School.

Despite the playoff defeat, Coach Tassell sees a bright future ahead.

“Our goal next season is clear: We need to get above .500 so we can control our own destiny,” he said. “This year we proved we belong. Next year, we’re going to prove we can compete for a championship.”

Offensively, Chloe (Goehring-Tassell), Harper (Suttenfield) and Allie (Schmitt) led a unit that showed significant development throughout the season. According to Tassell, all seven offensive players demonstrated improved cohesion and understanding of the game.

“They really learned how to play as a unit this year,” Tassell noted. “We’re still a young team with room to grow, and that’s an exciting position to be in.”

As flag football continues to establish itself in high school athletics, the Galt Warriors appear poised to be serious contenders in the years to come.
