GALT, CA (MPG) - The City of Galt announced Nov. 12 that there will be a temporary reduction on the speed limit on Kost Road from 45 mph to 25 mph near the Union Pacific Railroad crossing.

This temporary change is a safety measure recommended by Union Pacific Railroad, the California Public Utilities Commission and the Federal Highway Administration. A pavement depression just before the railroad tracks creates an uneven driving surface, causing vehicles to slow suddenly.

The speed reduction will help to improve safety for drivers in both directions while the city prepares for the Kost Road Improvements Project. The project will include new bike lanes; curb and gutter installation; sidewalk construction; and pavement restoration through the railroad crossing.

Once construction is complete, the roadway will be leveled to eliminate the dip, allowing vehicles to maintain a safe, consistent speed when crossing the tracks.

Message boards will alert drivers of the new speed limit, and the Galt Police Department will assist with enforcement. The city thanks residents for their patience and cooperation as it works to make Kost Road safer.
