GALT, CA (MPG) - The crack of the bat and the smell of fresh-cut grass returned to Harvey Park on Saturday, Feb. 28 as the Galt Youth Baseball League celebrated its 2026 Opening Day ceremonies. With 27 teams across four divisions, the energy and excitement at Harvey Park was a reminder of why baseball remains America’s favorite pastime.

This year’s opening ceremonies carried special meaning, as the league paused to honor the memory of beloved coach Eric Brechbill, who passed away from colorectal cancer in January. Brechbill was a dedicated coach whose passion for the game and love for his players left a lasting impression on the Galt Youth Baseball community. In his honor, the league erected a banner to ensure his memory remains present throughout the season and beyond. His son continues to play in the league, carrying on his father’s love of the game in the most meaningful way possible. The banner and his son’s presence on the field serve as a daily reminder of the impact one person can have on a community.

Players, families and coaches gathered for the festivities as the Farm, Rookies, Minors and Majors divisions officially launched their seasons. From the youngest Rookies taking their first swings to the experienced Majors stepping back onto the diamond, Opening Day represented a fresh start and a season full of possibilities for every player in the Galt area.

As the season progresses, standout players will have the opportunity to try out for the prestigious All-Star team. Last year, Galt’s All-Stars made the entire community proud, winning their way to the Cal Ripken World Series in New Jersey: a remarkable achievement that has set the bar high for this year’s hopefuls.

To every player, coach and family involved in Galt Youth Baseball this season – especially the Brechbill family – good luck, play hard and enjoy every moment on the diamond.

Play ball! This one’s for Coach Eric.
