ANGELS CAMP, CA (MPG) - The Galt High School cross country team turned a punishing foothill course into a showcase of depth and grit Sept. 19, racing to a team title and a long list of personal records at the Bret Harte Frogtown Cross Country Invitational at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. The Frogtown layout is one of the more honest tests on the fall calendar, mixing dirt and asphalt with three steep climbs that reward patience early and courage late, and the Warriors answered it in every division they entered.

The headline belonged to the Sophomore Boys, who claimed first place overall in the Small Schools division with a commanding 26 points. Galt left little doubt in the team scoring, finishing well clear of Union Mine (64), Hughson (74), Ripon (78) and Central Catholic (115) to take the top spot on the podium.

“Frogtown doesn't let you fake anything: Those three hills find out exactly who you are, and on Saturday our kids answered,” Head Coach Bruce Peterson said. “The sophomore boys winning a team title was terrific, but what I'll remember is the number of PRs up and down the roster. That tells me the work in practice is showing up on race day, and it tells me this team is peaking at the right time.”

Aaron Garcia spearheaded the victory with a strong third-place finish in 12:22, and the pack behind him did exactly what a winning team is supposed to do. Christian Juarez crossed sixth in 12:51 with Cristian Gomez right on his shoulder in seventh at 13:01. Jayden Sirben grabbed 12th in 13:33, and Trevor Rojas and Isaac Rodriguez closed out the scoring together, both clocking 13:51 for 13th and 14th. Strong supporting runs came from Damian Miller (14:04, 18th), Ayden Abarca (14:05, 19th), Wyatt Wymer (16:38, 46th), Robin Miller (18:54, 59th) and Diego Flores (20:54, 63rd).

In the Boys Varsity Small three-mile race, Galt secured fifth place overall with 191 points. Junior Daniel Crownover led the way in 31st with a time of 19:07, followed by David Espinoza (20:01, 46th), Zakery Forney (20:35, 52nd), Kole Pierce (20:38, 53rd) and Aaron Gonzalez (21:32, 83rd). 

Also competing for the Warriors were Edwyn Gallardo (23:35), Julian Alvarado (24:41), Mateo Roberto Mejia Beas (24:45), Mason Garcia (24:59) and Amilio Gomez (25:42).

The Girls Frosh-Soph squad finished sixth overall with 118 points in the two-mile race. Freshman Natalia Angel set the pace for Galt in 13th place at 16:26, backed by AnaLucia Alvarado (16:45, 19th), Crystal Lamb (18:29, 37th), Jade Garcia (18:37, 38th) and Allison Miller (21:41, 60th). In the Girls Varsity Small three-mile event, Danielle Aragon led the Warriors with a 34th-place finish of 25:38, while teammate Joseline Jimenez finished 41st in 26:47.

Perhaps the most encouraging number of the day was not a place or a score but a count. Treated by the coaching staff as a development meet, Frogtown produced a remarkable run of personal bests. Runners recording course PRs included Christian Juarez, Ayden Abarca, Julian Alvarado, Daniel Crownover, David Espinoza, Zakery Forney, Aaron Garcia, Mason Garcia, AnaLucia Alvarado, Natalia Angel, Danielle Aragon, Jade Garcia, Joseline Jimenez, Crystal Lamb, Amilio Gomez, Aaron Gonzalez, Damian Miller, Robin Miller, Kole Pierce, Mateo Roberto Mejia Beas, Isaac Rodriguez, Trevor Rojas, Jayden Sirben and Wyatt Wymer.
