MATHER, CA (MPG) - The Galt High School girls’ golf team hit a big milestone on Tuesday, Sept. 22, playing its first 18-hole match of the season at Mather Golf Course.

For most of the Lady Warriors, it was more than a season first. It was the first time they had ever played a full 18 holes in competition. Eighteen holes is a real test of stamina, focus and nerve for any golfer. It’s even harder for players who picked up a club only a few months ago. The Galt girls rose to the challenge, cheering each other on from the first tee to the final green.

The roster has just six players, and four of them are freshmen new to the sport. Head coach Neil Martin says his team’s attitude and progress stand out more than any number on a scorecard.

“We have a team of six and four of them are freshmen playing golf for the first time,” Martin said. “Every match is an opportunity to learn, improve and grow as golfers and teammates. Looking forward to the next four years.”

Senior Kandice Meixner and junior Vivian Gibson lead the team with their experience. Freshmen Araya Buchholz, Aliyah Rodriguez, Julia Garcia and Kamyla Vera make up the rest of the roster. They form a young core that could grow into a strong program over the next few seasons.

The results will come with time. For now, the Lady Warriors are building the most important parts of any program: confidence, support for each other and a love of the game.
