EL DORADO, CA (MPG) - The Galt Warriors had a rough night on the road Friday, Sept. 25, losing 56-6 to the Union Mine Diamondbacks. Galt’s offense never found its rhythm and finished with just 163 total yards. The defense was on the field for much of the night. The Warriors didn’t score until very late in the game, when senior quarterback Robert Rubio threw a touchdown pass to senior Marcus Bell.

Rubio went 7 of 15 through the air for 92 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. That’s a 46.7 percent completion rate and a 61.0 quarterback rating. His longest completion went for 30 yards. Rubio also ran six times for 19 yards, with a long of 11. That gave him 111 of Galt’s 163 total yards.

Bell scored Galt’s only points of the night, catching the late touchdown after the game was already decided. The Warriors did not convert the try after the touchdown. Bell caught two passes for 40 yards, averaging 20 yards a catch, and his longest was a 30-yard reception. He added a 1-yard run for 41 all-purpose yards. Senior Carlo Sterni led the team with three catches for 26 yards. Junior Mark Grammer also had 26 receiving yards on two catches, with a long of 15.

Galt’s running game produced 71 yards on 17 carries, an average of 4.2 yards per carry. Senior James Gilbert was the most effective runner. He gained 48 yards on six carries, averaging eight yards a run, and broke off a 37-yard run, the Warriors’ longest play of the night. Other carries went to senior Arthur Cordova (one for two yards), sophomore Sean Mace (two for one yard), Bell (one for one yard) and sophomore Ricky Akers (one for 0 yards). Galt did not score on the ground.

Union Mine put up 56 points, and Galt’s defense was on the field for most of the night. The Warriors made 67 tackles: 22 solo and 45 assisted.

Gilbert led the defense just as he led the running game. He had 10 tackles: three solo and seven assisted. Senior lineman Parker Millard was close behind with nine tackles (two solo, seven assisted). Juniors Dominick Gonzalez and Richard Geier had eight tackles each, with three solo and five assisted apiece. Senior Noah Ojeda added seven tackles, three of them solo.

Junior Bowdyn Beck and senior Taylor White had five tackles each. Cordova, Sterni and senior Axel Olmos Virgen each had four. Bell had two solo tackles, and Mace had one.

On a night with few highlights, Gilbert stood out on both sides of the ball. The Warriors played hard until the final whistle, and that effort led to their late touchdown. Galt will try to move past this lopsided loss next week, with the goal of cutting down turnovers and keeping drives going on offense.
