JV Warriors Pull Away from Union Mine for 37-15 Win

EL DORADO, CA (MPG) - The Galt JV Warriors beat Union Mine 37-15. The Diamondbacks stayed close for two quarters before Galt took over in the second half.
Galt scored first and led 7-0 after the first quarter. Union Mine answered in the second quarter, and Galt went into halftime up only 15-7. After the break, the Warriors’ defense kept the Diamondbacks off the board in the third quarter. Galt added seven points in the third and 15 in the fourth to finish it off.
The ground game carried the offense. Galt ran for 335 yards and three touchdowns on just 25 carries, an average of 13.4 yards per carry. Freshman Grayson Tassell needed only four carries to gain 112 yards and score twice, including a 78-yard run. Freshman Austyn Gubac added 116 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, with a long of 59. Sophomore Michael Silva did the hard work between the tackles, running 13 times for 102 yards. That gave Galt three 100-yard rushers in the same game.
Sophomore quarterback Chance George completed one of two passes for 10 yards, and that one completion was a touchdown to freshman Hank Van Steyn. George also ran once for five yards. Tassell added 74 yards on kick returns for 186 all-purpose yards, the most on the team. Sophomore Max Matos had a nine-yard kick return.
Holding on to the ball was the one thing Galt needs to clean up. The Warriors fumbled three times and lost two. Silva and Van Steyn each lost one, and Tassell fumbled once but Galt got the ball back. Even with those giveaways, the offense still put up 345 total yards.
On defense, Galt made 60 tackles as a team, including 5.0 tackles for loss. Freshman Aaron Byrd led with six tackles. Freshman Andrew Lee and sophomore Jonathan Jimenez each had five.
Gubac and freshman Bryson Garbarino each had four tackles and one tackle for loss, so both made an impact on both sides of the ball. Sophomore Colin Azevedo and freshman Adan Chaidez each had four tackles. Van Steyn, sophomore Andy Sanchez and freshman Manuel Rubio each had a tackle for loss. Emilio Viramontes, Chance George and Julian Delossantos had three tackles apiece.
