GALT, CA (MPG) - Galt High School’s football team dropped a 49-6 decision to Argonaut on Friday night, but the Warriors’ only points came after halftime and head coach JJ Woodward said his players' fight never wavered.

Before kickoff, Galt honored its 11 seniors in a ceremony on the field. Each senior walked out with his parents before running out alongside his teammates, a moment that marked the group's final senior night in front of the home crowd.

The seniors recognized were Arthur Cordova, Noah Ojeda, Robert Rubio, Carlo Sterni, James Gilbert, Taylor White, Marcus Bell, Nestor Sanchez, Parker Millard, Axel Olmos Virgen and Emiliano Solorio.

Argonaut, a physical and disciplined team, controlled the game from the start and built a comfortable lead by halftime. Galt broke through in the second half for its lone touchdown, avoiding the shutout.

“I’m proud of how hard our kids played tonight,” Woodward said. “Argonaut is a good, physical football team, and they deserve a lot of credit. We faced plenty of adversity throughout the game, including some calls that didn't go our way, but our kids kept battling and never used it as an excuse. There were things we could have done better ourselves, and that's what we'll focus on. What I'll remember most is that our guys kept fighting for each other until the end.”

Quarterback Robert Rubio, one of the seniors honored before kickoff, completed 8 of 15 passes for 88 yards with one touchdown and one interception, finishing with a quarterback rating of 65.4. He was under pressure throughout the night, sacked seven times for minus-35 yards.

Carlo Sterni was Galt's top receiving threat, catching two passes for 58 yards, including a 38-yard grab. James Gilbert hauled in five passes for 40 yards and also led the Warriors on the ground, rushing eight times for 40 yards. Gilbert finished with 80 all-purpose yards, while Sterni totaled 72.

Galt rushed 33 times for 51 yards as a team. Sean Mace carried three times for 10 yards, Sterni added 14 yards on four carries, Arthur Cordova gained 4 yards on one attempt and Noah Ojeda picked up 2 yards on one carry. Rubio's rushing total was minus-19 yards on 16 attempts, a figure that included the seven sacks.

Mark Grammer caught one pass for a loss of 10 yards.

Defensive statistics were not available at press time.

Galt now turns its attention to its final home game of the season, the Dairy Bowl against crosstown rival Liberty Ranch on Nov. 6. The matchup carries extra meaning for the Warriors, many of whom grew up playing alongside Liberty Ranch players in middle school and remain close friends with them off the field. Galt is looking forward to the challenge.

Woodward said the focus this week will remain on correcting mistakes rather than dwelling on the adversity his team faced against Argonaut.

“We’ll focus on the things we could have done better ourselves,” he said. “Our guys kept fighting for each other until the end, and that's what I'll remember most.”
